The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal

The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, also known as the KZN South Coast or just the South Coast, is a popular holiday destination in the southern region of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Renowned for its stunning beaches and a variety of South Coast accommodation options catering to all budgets, the “South Coast” starts 30-minutes’ drive south from Durban and follows the coastline for about 120km. Stretching from Scottburgh in the north to Port Edward in the south and Harding in the west, the South Coast is governed by the UGU District Municipality. The Margate Airport offers flights to and/or from OR Tambo International Johannesburg on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday.

The South Coast with its subtropical climate is known as Paradise of the Zulu Kingdom and has 58 golden beaches which include many of South Africa’s favorite beaches. These include Shelly Beach, Margate Beach, Lucien Beach, St Michael’s Beach and Ramsgate Beach which are loved by locals and holiday makers alike for swimming, surfing, body-boarding and fishing from the rocks or piers. Most of the popular beaches have lifeguards on duty during the peak periods and in season to keep the bathers safe. Bathers are encouraged swim in the designated areas manned by lifeguards and avoid areas with strong currents and riptides as these can pose a risk to even experienced and strong swimmers. Explore and discover the colourful and unique marine species snorkeling or SCUBA diving in the warm Indian Ocean.

Don’t miss out on the annual winter sardine run when the shoals of these silver fish bring the ocean alive. It is really a bucket list item that must be experienced at least once in your lifetime. The sardine fever is hard to resist and the bounty of ocean species that are on show is phenomenal. From the game fish and sharks to the dolphins and whales it is a sight to behold.  Follow the ever present gannets and seagulls diving into the massive shoals as they are chased along the coastline, bubbling up to the surface to escape the hungry predators below.

With Protea reef on our doorstep, dive into a selection of water sports and activities such as shark diving, scuba diving, big game fishing, shark fishing and bottom fishing. Visit one of the most successful crocodile breeding farms in South Africa or spend a few hours relaxing in the Valley of Butterflies.

The coastal region has nature reserves and the two gorges, Oribi Gorge and Umtamvuna Gorge with amazing wildlife, hiking, picnicking and extreme activities. The reptile farm has a mix of pythons, anacondas, cobras, rattlesnakes and family a restaurant and curio shop selling souvenirs and accessories. The inland subtropical forests and grassy hills offer the outdoors-man many running, mountain biking, motor sports and biking activities.

There are many activities, adventure and things to do on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal throughout the year and you can view the happenings and events that are updated throughout the year on our Events and Happenings page which is kept updated with all the current events in the area.
